Existing lush vegetation includes many varieties of trees, flowers, fruits and shrubs including abundant Xate trees (a small and attractive palm tree); Cohune and Bay Leaf palm trees; My Lady trees (used for the poles in palm leaf-thatched roofs); Santa Maria trees (a durable hardwood, with distinct and attractive leaves, and another of Belize's canopy species); Cabbage palm trees; Cacao trees (key ingredient for sweet cocoa drinks); Mahogany trees (the national tree of Belize); Sapodilla trees (delicious fruit tree from which the gummy substance for "chiclet" gum is derived); Sugar Cane (a giant grass with a solid, woody stalk that contains sweet sap); and fruits such as Avocado, Banana, Plantain and Watermelon - growth which you would expect to find in a tropical rainforest setting. |
