More Info about Cayo, Belize

An Offer You Can't Refuse. Blanketing almost 300 square miles (127,000 acres) of the Cayo District, the Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is home to Blancaneaux Lodge, owned by movie director, Francis Ford Coppola. Rumor has it that he'll make you an offer (for a piece of his famed pizza) that you can't refuse! Keep your eyes peeled for Belize's legendary toucans, scarlet macaws, tapirs and howler monkeys!

Fewer Bugs and No Hurricanes.
The Cayo district is considered relatively safe from hurricanes and it is the place that many people come to when hurricane warnings occur. Also of note, Cayo has very few sand flies and mosquitoes, much to the envy of people living in other districts. These facts, coupled with less expensive property prices, makes Cayo a preferred and desirable location to live.

The Main Squeeze of Belize.
If you need a Vitamin "C" hit, Cayo marks the spot! Cayo is Belize's main squeeze for citrus trees - some 5,000 acres of citrus trees dot Barton Creek Farm. Cayo's chief crops are oranges, grapefruits, tangerines and bananas. The Better In Belize Eco Community boasts many fruit trees including mango, plantain, banana and citrus!

Capital City Located Smack Dab in the Middle of Belize. Located in the Cayo District, Belize's capital Belmopan, is situated virtually smack dab in the middle of Belize. Referred to as the "Garden City" Belmopan has been the capital city of Belize since 1961, relocated there after Hurricane Hattie decimated Belize City.  This was a planned city capital which was created to move the capital city out of hurricane territory.

With a population of about 9,000, Belmopan is in an expansion mode with the move of the US Embassy from Belize City to Belmopan, which will likely result in further facilities, amenities and entertainment outlets springing up in the capital. Students at the University of Belize in Belmopan add a wonderful splash of color to the city’s landscape.

The central area of Belmopan
is comprised mainly of Government buildings, banks and businesses. The center of Belmopan is a hive of activity since Novelo's Bus Station provides connections to and from Belmopan. The lively Market Square is a great place to score cheap vittles before you head back to Better In Belize!

Charming San Ignacio. The star town of Cayo is charming San Ignacio Town! It is the hub of ecotourism in Belize. From there, people go on tours of the Mayan sites, caving and cave tubing, rainforest treks, river-rafting, canoeing, and many more activities. San Ignacio is a very culturally diverse city with its sister city, Santa Elena, just across the bridge over the Macal River. San Ignacio is a popular destination for families relocating to Belize. San Ignacio is about a 20-minute drive to the Better In Belize Eco Community.

market-in-belizeSaturday is Market Day in San Ignacio.
