Where to buy Food in Belize

San Ignacio boasts Belize’s largest Farmers’ Market

It is a daily market which swells to 100+ vendors on Saturday, the traditional market day. The produce and goods sold at the market are well-priced. The San Ignacio Market represents a cost-of-living coup for Cayo residents and is the envy of those who do not live close enough to shop here! Fresh meat is available from several meat shops in the market or from countrywide distributors such as Running W, Caribbean Chicken, and Reinland Meats. Additionally, there are numerous large stores in San Ignacio that offer a variety of groceries with price points to suit everyone’s budget.

Getting closer to Better In Belize EcoVillage, you can shop at the Benque Farmers' Market in Benque Viejo del Carmen. Benque Market offers a variety of fruit stalls, along with other food stalls. We are often asked “Where are the best places to shop for groceries in Benque?” There are all sorts of options including the Chinese stores by the market, all along the boulevard - with perhaps the most affordable alternative being the Chinese store beside the Catholic church (on Guerra and Church Street). Here’s a list of some of the places to shop for groceries in Benque:

  • Entrance to Benque, on right hand side before Chiclero Park.

  • Long Lucky Supermarket, George Price Blvd. and Arenal Rd.

  • Zhen’s Supermarket, George Price Blvd.

  • Hanna Meats, George Price Blvd., across from the football field – farm produce, fresh cow’s milk and cheese.
Moving to Belize with your pets
Moving to Belize with your pets?

Bringing a pet into Belize falls under live animal importation and is regulated by the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA). Before traveling to Belize, you need to obtain an import permit from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA).

Always check the website at www.baha.org.bz  for the most up to date import permit and information. To complete the application, simply obtain a Veterinary Certificate for Belize issued by a licensed vet in the country of origin within 14 days of entry, or within 10 days if your pet travels unaccompanied. You will also need a proof of rabies vaccination administered no less than 30 days, and no more than one year prior to arrival. A tick and tapeworm test will also be required before entry into Belize.

Notify the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) of your arrival date, arrival time, and flight number two days before your pet is to arrive to ensure that a veterinary officer is present at the time of entry. Dogs and cats less than three months of age are to be confined at home until three months of age, at which time the animal must be vaccinated against rabies and confined for an additional thirty (30) days after importation to Belize. Quarantine inspection at the port of entry is required for all dogs and cats. US $30 entry fee + US $12.50 fax fee is charged upon entry to Belize. Contact us if you have any other questions.

How do I Ship to Belize
How do I ship my personal belongings to Belize?

Shipping your personal items to Belize can be very easy once you locate a reliable shipping company. Once you have located a shipping company, ascertain the location of their warehouses. You will need to arrange for your goods to be sent to their warehouse premises.

Some companies will charge you based on sizes of the boxes you are shipping, volume, or by weight. Every shipping company varies so be sure to obtain a quote prior to shipping. You can also choose just a shipping option and personally handle the items at the port of entry for clearance and custom duties or you can opt to have the same company handle these services for a fee. Most of them provide an all-inclusive service where they deliver to your doorstep.

For years we have been using Cayo Cargo for our shipping needs from the US!
